Memorial United Methodist Church History
Memorial United Methodist is a Christ-centered church with a rich history of serving the people of Greer and beyond. For many years we have strived to share the Good News of God’s love with everyone.
The first record of the church now known as Memorial United Methodist Church appeared in the minutes of the 1882 session of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The “Greers” Methodist Church was listed with 18 members and the Rev. L.F. Beaty as the pastor. By 1886, the membership had grown to 43 members, and the church was known as the First Methodist Church of the Town of Greers.
Until the first church building was completed in 1888, the church met on the 2nd floor of Hills store at North Main and Poinsett streets. In memory of the founding members of the church, the name was changes to Memorial Methodist Church in 1922. The current education building behind the sanctuary was completed in 1940 with an addition in 1952. The construction of the current sanctuary was begun in 1957, but on May 18, 1959, the interior of the new sanctuary was destroyed by fire. Less than a year later, on January 3, 1960, the first worship service was held in the restored santuary. The Social Hall adjacent to the church was deed in 1972 and the Family Life Center in 1991.
Memorial’s current membership is around 600 and we hope to continue to grow in faith and in membership as the years pass. Memorial is looking toward the future with the goal of nurturing our own family and reaching out to those in need, both spiritually and materially. Our Christ-centered attitude and welcoming nature are aimed at spreading the Good News to all that we encounter. We hope that you will choose to make Memorial your new church family and that we can all grow together through the Grace and Love given to us by our Lord Jesus Christ.
